Why do drains block so often in Kotara?

Four faults cause most of the blockages on these blocks:

Clay joints that have moved

The post-war houses were plumbed in vitrified clay, which settles and parts at the joints with age. Every open joint is a doorway.

Roots hunting water

Deep established gardens and the bushland edges of Blackbutt Reserve keep root systems close, and a weeping joint is the easiest moisture on the block to find.

Runoff with nowhere to go

The blocks roll, and steep driveways hand their stormwater straight to the lowest line in the yard.

Autumn leaf fall

Mature trees shed into gutters and gullies, and the first big downpour of the year packs the grates.

Which of the four you have changes the fix, so the camera inspection happens before the tools come out.

Booking a drain clear, start to finish

The call takes a few minutes, and the method follows the diagnosis.

  1. 1

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 2

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 3

    Film, clear, film again

We locate the fault on camera, clear it with the jetter or eel, then film it again to prove the flow.

  4. 4

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Drain Jetting

High-pressure water, no chemicals. Grease, sludge and fine roots stripped from the pipe wall:

Blocked Sewer

Sewage rising, not draining. Waste coming up through a floor drain or gully is its own emergency:

Stormwater Drains

The yard that drowns. Stormwater lines that flood the low side of the block in every downpour:

Pipe Relining

A resin sleeve, no trench. A liner cured in place, with the garden and driveway left intact:

Roots out, entry point found. For the lines that block on a seasonal rhythm:

What drives the price of a drain clear?

Access and pipe material set most of the figure on a drain job, before the blockage itself even comes into it.

  • Where the line runs A gully hemmed in by a retaining wall on a sloping block is slower to work from than an open laundry floor waste.
  • What the line is built from Clay takes a gentler method than PVC, and an old galvanised run can dictate the eel over the jetter.
  • The footage A pipe that only needed clearing is one job; a split line that will choke again within weeks is another, and the recording shows which.
  • The hour of the booking After-hours work carries a higher rate, and you hear it before anything is booked.

Clay, roots and the low-side gully

The ground decides more than the fittings do

This suburb rolls, and steep driveways send their runoff to whatever line sits lowest on the block. Area figures put the average at 1128 millimetres of rain a year, so those low-side lines carry a real load.

Some overflow is not your fault

The 2023 council flood study earmarked Kimbarra Close for a closer look, and the suburb's runoff makes its way to a lined creek channel running through the middle of it. When that network surcharges in a storm, a clear line can still back up, and the footage separates a blocked pipe from a surcharged one before you pay for anything.

When we're not the right call

The main under the street is Hunter Water's to repair, and the footage shows exactly where your line ends and theirs begins. A yard that floods because of how the land falls is a drainage design problem first, and no clear will hold where the water was always going to pool.

Blocked drain questions from these blocks

Do you clear blocked drains near Westfield Kotara?

Yes. Blocks near the shopping centre get the same service as every other part of Kotara, right out to the blocks that back onto bushland. Every clear is filmed at both ends of the job, and you agree the price before the jetter is unrolled.

My drain blocks again every winter. Is that roots?

Often, yes. Clay lines under the post-war houses crack and shift at their joints over the years, and the gardens along the reserve edges keep root systems well supplied. A camera run shows the roots in the line and whether a clear will hold or the pipe needs relining.

Will jetting damage old clay pipes?

Not when the jetter runs at a pressure matched to the pipe. The footage from before the clear shows what the line can take. Badly fractured clay gets a different method, and the operator names it before starting.

Who fixes the sewer main under the street?

Hunter Water, if the fault sits past your boundary on the network side. We clear and repair everything on your side, and if the camera shows the problem is out in the main, we hand you their fault line and the footage you will need.
