Kotara Gas Fitting Services

Two arms of the gas work have their own pages, and the related plumbing sits on the other hubs:

What Are the Warning Signs?

Gas faults rarely stay quiet. These are the signs households notice first:

  • A sulphur smell by the cooktop, wall heater or meter, even one that comes and goes
  • Burners that flicker yellow when they should sit blue
  • A hiss at a fitting or along a pipe run you can hear with the appliance off
  • Pilot lights that won't stay lit, or a heater cutting out partway through a cycle
  • An unexplained jump in the gas bill, which points to a leak or a struggling appliance

Don't wait on any of these. A pressure test on the line settles it quickly.

How a Gas Job Runs

  1. 1

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 2

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 3

    Repair, test, sign off

The gas fitter makes the repair or fits the appliance, runs a pressure test and certifies the line before anything relights.

  4. 4

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

How Is a Gas Job Priced?

So the invoice shows the figure you agreed to, not one that grew on the way.

"We had an urgent gas problem that required immediate attention at our home…on a Friday afternoon. … Identified the issue, fixed and tested" Lee

  • The length and route of any new line, since pipe and trenching set the baseline
  • Access: a run under a concrete driveway or behind a retaining wall costs more than a straight side path
  • The appliance itself, with a wall heater a smaller job than a pool heater on a long line
  • After-hours attendance, which is priced differently to a weekday booking

Lee found that out on a Friday afternoon:

Gas Lines Under the Post-War Houses

Lines added one renovation at a time

Most houses here went up as low-set weatherboard and brick-veneer places from the late 1940s onward, and in houses that age, gas was often added in stages: a wall heater one year, a cooktop swap another. Every extra join is a spot worth pressure-testing before new work hangs off the line.

Ground that lengthens any run

These blocks rise and fall, and a BBQ point or pool heater at the back of the yard can mean pipe run past a steep driveway or a retaining wall, which adds metres a flat block would not need. The route is priced before a trench opens, and that price takes in every metre of it.

When we're not the right call

A leak at the meter itself, or out on the network's side of it, is handled by the gas network's own crew, and the first call goes to their fault line. If a fault turns out to be electrical, an element or a circuit on the appliance, we name the trade it needs instead of quoting for work outside our licence.

Straight Answers on the Gas Work

Do I need a licensed gas fitter to connect my new cooktop?

Yes. The connection has to be made and signed off by a gas fitter licensed for the work, and the certificate matters the moment you sell or claim on insurance. A handyman who fits a cooktop leaves the line uncertified, which is a problem you inherit, not him.

What should I do if I can smell gas inside my home?

Get everyone outside first, without flicking switches or lighting anything on the way out. Turn off the meter tap if you can reach it safely, then call the network's emergency number from outside. Once the house is safe, ring us about finding and repairing the fault.

Can an old heater connection in a post-war house be brought up to standard?

Usually, yes. Plenty of the low-set homes here have had heaters added over the years with fittings that no longer meet current rules. A gas fitter can test the line, swap the non-compliant parts and certify the connection so the heater runs safely.

Do you connect pool heaters and outdoor BBQ points?

Yes, both. They sit on the appliance installation page alongside the cooktops and ovens. What shapes the job is the run to the equipment: pipe under concrete or behind a wall is slower to lay than a straight run beside the house.
