Plumber running a drain camera at an outdoor pit

What does the camera actually show?

The camera head lights the pipe as it travels, and the footage answers three questions at once:

  • what is in the line: roots, grease, a collapsed section, a dropped joint or a lost object
  • where it sits, as a distance from the opening we went in through, so the fix can be marked out
  • what condition the pipe is in either side of the fault, which is what decides repair over clear

A clear without footage is a guess. A jetter or an eel can bore a hole through a root mass and leave the split joint that let the roots in, so the drain blocks again the next wet season. Footage tells you if the pipe behind the blockage is still in one piece.

How does an inspection run?

Four steps, start to finish:

  1. 1

    Access first

We lift the closest gully grate or open an inspection point, usually in the yard or the subfloor, so no digging starts unless the line has no access at all.

  2. 2

    Down the line

The head is pushed along the whole run while the picture plays on the monitor beside it.

  3. 3

The locator marks the depth and line

The pipe locator tracks the camera head from the surface, so a fault can be marked on the ground within centimetres.

  4. 4

    The report and the price

You watch the footage with us, get the written findings, and a fixed figure for the fix before any work starts.

A pipe past saving can be lined without a trench through pipe relining, while tree root removal suits a pipe that is intact with only roots to cut.

How is a camera run priced?

  • how far the camera has to travel, since filming out to the kerb takes longer than a quick look under the house
  • access, since feeding cable through a subfloor hatch or around a retaining wall is slower than using an open yard point
  • a line still holding water, which has to be cleared before the camera can see the walls

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.

Why the Camera Earns Its Keep Here

Kotara took shape around its station in the 1920s and then grew as a garden suburb after 1947, and the drains under it follow those same waves of building

Drains from those decades were mostly laid in clay, a rigid pipe that splits and drops out of line as it ages. Deep setbacks leave big garden trees growing over many of these old sewer runs, and a leaking joint is where their roots head first.

The footage changes what you pay for

Under a post-war house, the camera separates three very different jobs: a line that only needs roots cut, a joint that needs a spot repair, and a run that has collapsed and needs relining or renewal. Those three carry three different prices, and the only honest way to know which one is yours is to look.

Where This Job Stops and Another Starts

When we're not the right call: if the camera reaches your boundary and the break is further out, in the street's sewer main, Hunter Water owns that repair, and our recording goes with your report to them. Stormwater pushed up by a full creek channel is its own case, handled on the stormwater page, and the footage shows which one you have.

Common Questions From These Blocks

How does a camera inspection find tree roots in my Kotara drain?

The camera head moves along the whole run and records everything it passes. Roots show as a fibrous mass hanging into the pipe, and a split clay collar shows as a step in the pipe wall with soil or water weeping through it. You watch the same footage we do, and a copy of the recording is yours.

Do the post-war houses in Kotara need a camera before a clear?

The post-war houses mostly carry clay drains, which crack and drop out of line as they age. On a line that old, a blind clear can open a path through the roots yet leave the split joint untouched, so the blockage returns within months. The footage shows whether clearing is enough or the pipe itself needs repair.

Can I get the footage to show my landlord or insurer?

Yes. The recording is part of the job, and we hand it over with a written report describing the fault, its location and the recommended fix. Tenants can pass it to the agent, and owners can attach it to a claim with their insurer or to a second trade's quote.

Does a camera inspection work through a full blockage?

Not straight away. Water sitting in a completely blocked line hides the pipe walls, so the line is usually cleared first and filmed straight after, which confirms what caused it and that the pipe is sound. That is why every clear we do is filmed going in and filmed again coming out.
